Leo Sewell
Assistant Coach – MSU-Northern Men's Basketball
Leo Sewell enters his first season as an assistant coach with the MSU-Northern Lights basketball program, bringing a strong foundation of leadership, academic excellence, and on-court experience to the coaching staff. Sewell spent the past two seasons as a member of the Lights, where he served as a team captain during his final year.
Leo was a very hard-working, focused, and committed student-athlete for the Lights. He was recognized as a two-time Academic All-Conference honoree, and earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2026. He was also awarded a MSUN Student Excellence Award last year, for his outstanding work in the classroom, as well as his contributions on campus and in the community. A Frontier Conference 2026 Champion of Character winner, his transition from player to coach also reflects his deep understanding of the Lights’ culture, expectations, and competitive standards.
In his role as assistant, Sewell is involved in several key areas, including scouting, recruiting, practice and workout planning, player skill development, and strength training. His communication skills and firsthand experience as a player for the Lights provides valuable insight and relatability as he supports the current roster. He was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and graduated from MSU-Northern in the spring of 2026 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration. He is savoring in the opportunity to serve in his new role, while being a very active contributor to the Havre community.
