Owen Smith
Assistant Coach – MSU-Northern Men's Basketball
Owen Smith begins his second season as an assistant coach with the MSU-Northern Lights basketball program, bringing a strong foundation of leadership, academic excellence, and on-court experience to the coaching staff. Smith spent the past year as a student assistant, and previously played for the Lights from 2023-2025, where he served as a team captain during his final year. A dedicated student-athlete, Smith was honored as a two-time Academic All-Conference honoree, earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, and was named a Frontier Conference Champion of Character in 2025. He was also awarded a MSUN Student Excellence Award that same year, for his outstanding work in the classroom, as well as his contributions on campus and in the community.
Owen is an extremely intelligent individual and his move from player to coach underscores his profound grasp of Lights Basketball values, expectations, and what things need to be focused on for success. In his role as assistant, Smith is involved in several key areas, including scouting, recruiting, practice and workout planning, player skill development, and strength training. His past as a Lights player gives him the experience needed to effectively guide and prepare the current team.
Originally from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Smith graduated in the spring of 2026 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education and Health. He is currently attaining his Masters Degree in Athletic Administration, and is expected to graduate in the spring of 2027. He is excited to continue serving the Lights program and remaining an active part of the campus and our region.
