William McFarland joins Montana State University–Northern as Special Teams Coordinator after serving on the football staff at the University of Montana.

McFarland began his tenure with the Grizzlies in 2024 as a Special Teams Assistant under head coach Bobby Hauck. In 2025, he was promoted to Director of Player Personnel and NFL Liaison. In those roles, he contributed to recruiting and roster management, coordinated the program’s video operations, served as the primary contact for NFL personnel and assisted with special teams duties.

Before entering the collegiate ranks, McFarland worked as a social science teacher and coached football in Southern California, where he also served as a head baseball coach. He later coached in Big Timber, Montana, where his parents, Bill and Sara, currently reside.

A native of Whittier, California, McFarland earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from St. John’s University in 2014 and a master’s degree in teaching from the University of Southern California in 2021.
