Sweet Home, Ore.- In a highly anticipated dual between two top ranked NAIA programs, the No. 5 Montana State University-Northern Lights defeated the No. 7 Southern Oregon Raiders 23-13. The Lights won six out of the 10 matches Thursday night at Sweet Home High School to move to 7-2 on the season.
Freshman
Robert Pair (125) started off strong for the Lights by defeating Ian Rogers by major decision (4-0) and No. 2
Matt Weber (141) won his match against No. 13 Devin Poppen with a 10-9 decision.
No. 16 Sophomore
Drake Randall (149) lost to No. 2 Tyler Cowger by a 6-1 decision. Cowger now has a 19 match winning streak in duals.
No. 10 sophomore
Andrew Bartel held off his opponent to win his match by a 1-0 decision. Also picking up big wins for Northern were freshman
Steeler French (174) with a 4-3 decision, No. 1 senior
Ben Stroh (184) with a pin over Max Hane, and No. 2 senior
Taylor Kornoely with a 12-3 major desion.
This was the second year on a row that Northern has beat Southern Oregon.
The Lights will now travel to Reno, Nev. to wrestle in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 18. Their next dual will be at home against the Dickinson State Blue Hawks on January 12 at 7:00pm.
