Story of the Game
The Skylights went into the conference tournament as the No. 6 seed and had the task of taking on hosting school Carroll College (No. 3 seed) in The P.E. Center last night in the opening round of the Frontier Conference Tournament. The Saints used a balanced attacking game with seven players registering kills to sweep the Skylights 25-16, 25-14, 25-19.
Stat of the Match
Northern once again had trouble capitalizing on their attacks as they registered a dismal .080 hitting percentage in the match. The Skylights had 26 kills on 113 attempts while committing 17 hitting errors. Sophomore middle hitter
Timi Severson led the team with 11 kills on 24 attempts and hit an impressive .333 on the night. Â
Turning Point
The Skylights built a quick 7-2 lead in the first set with the help of kills from both Severson and senior outside hitter
Cassie Krueger, as well as a service ace from senior defensive specialist
Kylie Pasieka. The Fighting Saints used two different four-point runs to move ahead midway through the set at 13-10. Attacking errors by the Skylights accompanied by Carroll College blocks late in the set gave the Saints the advantage and eventual 25-16 win.Â
In the second set, Carroll College took the early lead and never looked back. Northern used a three-point run to move within three points of the Saints at 6-9, but that was the closest they would get for the rest of the set. Carroll College used a five-point run towards the end of the set to go up 21-11 to secure the win.
Northern made one last stand in the third and final set by coming back from being down 1-5 to take a 7-6 lead. Both teams exchanged the lead over the next couple of plays and eventually tied the contest up at 10-10. The Saints again used a five-point run to gain momentum at 18-12. The Skylights tried to chip away at the lead, but it was too little too late as the Saints won 25-19.
The Skylights Final Record
The Skylights finish the season with a conference record of 3-9 and an overall record of 9-18. Northern finished the season in the sixth spot in conference standings.
