Northern Moves to 4-8 After Menlo College Tournament

Story of the Game
The MSU-Northern Skylights started off strong as they took on the No. 7 Westmont Warriors at the Menlo College Invitational Tournament in Atherton, Calif.  Costly service and attack errors by the Skylights helped propel the Warriors to a win in three straight sets (25-21, 25-11, 25-16).
 
Stat of the Match
Northern had a difficult time piecing together their offense as they posted a .100 hitting percentage, connecting on just 27 attacks on 100 attempts and committing 17 errors.  Senior outside hitter Cassie Krueger led the team with eight kills.

Turning Point
Westmont went on a 5-0 run to start the second set.  The Skylights called a timeout to regroup, but the Warriors continued their strong play at the net and used a six point run later in the set to come out on top 25-11.

The Skylights So Far
This loss moves the Skylights to 3-6 overall.

Story of the Game
In their second match of the Menlo College Tournament, the Skylights bounced back in a big way after dropping their first by defeating the Hawks of San Diego Christian College in five sets (25-14, 18-25, 16-25, 25-23, 15-13).
 
Stat of the Match
Northern improved upon their poor hitting performance from the first match by connecting on 57 of 129 total kill attempts (.279 hitting percentage).  Sophomore middle hitter Timi Severson posted 16 kills while sophomore setter Hailey Warren tallied 44 total assists.

Turning Point
Late in the deciding fifth set, the Skylights rallied back after being down 6-11 with a six point run to move ahead of the Hawks 12-11.  Senior outside hitter Cassie Krueger came up big with two kills in the final moments that helped to secure the win.

Northern's win moves the squad to 4-6 overall.

Story of the Game
On their second day of action, the Skylights dropped their match to the host team Menlo College in three straight sets (17-25, 21-25, 16-25).
 
Stat of the Match
12 reception errors by the Skylights allowed the Oaks to capitalize in a big way by collecting 12 aces.  Northern tallied three aces of their own with sophomore middle hitter Haley Yoder leading the team with two.  

Turning Point
A 15-5 lead for Menlo College midway through the second set forced Northern to call a timeout.  From there, the Skylights scraped their way back to bring the match within five points at 10-15.  A late push by the Oaks allowed them to finish with just a four point advantage (25-21).

This loss moves the Skylights to 4-7 overall.

Story of the Game
The MSU-Northern Skylights dropped their final match of the Menlo College Invitational to William Jessup University in three straight sets (17-25, 21-25, 19-25).
 
Stat of the Match
Northern showed improved defense from the previous match by collecting six total blocks and 38 digs.  Junior right side hitter Mikayla Virostek posted four blocks while sophomore defensive specialist Hannah Amtmann tallied 14 digs.

Turning Point
A five point run (6-1) at the beginning of the first set by the William Jessup Warriors helped them carry that momentum throughout the second and third sets and eventually sweep the Skylights.  

The Skylights So Far
The second straight loss puts the Skylights 4-8 overall (one win ahead of their record from last season after 12 matches).  

Up Next
After a long weekend out of state, the Skylights will now travel 112 miles down the road to Great Falls this weekend to participate in the University of Providence Tournament.  They will take on North Idaho in a scrimmage game and take on both Dickinson State University and Benedictine University at Mesa.  Live video and stat links will be posted in the schedule section as soon as they are made available.
