The Montana State University-Northern Skylights earned a hard-fought win over Dickinson State University on Saturday afternoon, taking the match 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20) inside the Armory Gymnasium.
Northern came out firing in the opening set, jumping ahead early and dominating at the net. The Skylights' offense found its rhythm right away, hitting .333 as a team and cruising to a 25-13 victory.
Dickinson State regrouped in the second set and responded with their best stretch of the day. The Blue Hawks capitalized on Northern errors and strong blocking to pull even, 25-21.
The Skylights bounced back with a balanced attack in the third, led by
Josie Hasler and
Lexa Stock. Northern built an early lead and never looked back, taking the set 25-18. The fourth set was tightly contested, but key kills from Hasler and
Macee Selman, along with clutch defense from libero
Baily Egan, sealed the 25-20 win and the match.
Northern's offense was clicking, finishing with
61 kills and a
.201 hitting percentage, while holding Dickinson to just
.088. The Skylights also held edges in
digs (110-96) and
blocks (10-9).
Offensively, Hasler led the way with
15 kills, followed closely by Stock with
14 and Selman with
13. Setter Lauren Schmitt orchestrated the attack with efficiency, while
Lexi Jones was a force at the net with
7 blocks.
Defensively, Egan anchored the back row with
30 digs, while Selman and Stock each added key contributions to slow down the Blue Hawks' attack.
For Dickinson State,
Aubrey Allison tallied
13 kills,
Carmen Pallone added
10 kills and 6 blocks, and
Geraldyne Fernandez was stellar in the back row with
32 digs.
With the win, MSU-Northern moves to 15-9 overall and 13-5 in conference. The Skylights will be on the road against Bellevue University and Dakota State next weekend.
