In a spirited Frontier Conference matchup, Bellevue University pulled off a tough road win, defeating Montana State University-Northern 69–63 in Havre on Saturday night.
The Bruin's jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it, building separation behind efficient scoring from their backcourt and bench. Bellevue shot 54.2 percent from the field and hit 80 percent of their free throws, key factors in sustaining their offensive edge.
Bellevue's balanced offensive attack was paced by Ahamad Bynum, who led all scorers with 17 points and 9 rebounds. RJ Smith contributed 16 points and 8 boards. Haliburton added 9 points.
For the host Northern, Tracen Jilot was the top performer with 15 points, hitting three triples and making key baskets to keep the contest close. Austin Ramos chipped in 15 points of his own with three made triples as well, while Leon Sayers IV scored 14 in a physical effort on both ends of the floor.
Montana State-Northern and Bellevue went back and forth through the opening half, with both teams trading baskets in a competitive start. Bellevue was able to establish a slight edge behind efficient shooting, while Northern stayed within striking distance by knocking down timely perimeter shots and attacking the basket. Northern hit a couple big shots to take the lead going into halftime (41-35).
The Lights battled throughout the second half, matching Bellevue's intensity and cutting into the deficit with strong defensive stretches and timely scoring. The Lights made several late pushes, but Bellevue answered with key baskets down the stretch to maintain its lead. Despite Northern's continued effort and execution in the closing minutes, the comeback attempt came up short.
The Lights drop to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in Conference. The Lights turn around and play Northwest Poly Tech on Wednesday in Havre at 6pm.
