Montana State University-Northern football battled Dickinson State on Saturday afternoon but fell to the Blue Hawks, 44-13, at the Biesiot Activities Center.
The Blue Hawks took control early, scoring 10 points in the opening quarter to take a 10-0 lead. Dickinson State added three more touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter to build a 27-6 advantage at halftime.
Northern got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter when quarterback
Malakhi Statler connected with
Isaiah Woodley for a six-yard touchdown. The drive covered 76 yards over eight plays, giving the Lights some momentum heading into halftime.
Dickinson State continued to control the game in the third quarter, scoring 17 points to extend its lead to 44-6. Northern battled through the fourth quarter, with
Bryan Yobo hauling in a six-yard touchdown pass from Statler to cap the scoring for the Lights.
Statler led Northern's offensive effort, completing 19 of 49 passes for
230 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball eight times for 12 yards.
The Lights found success through the air, with
Juliun Benson leading all Northern receivers with seven catches for
121 yards. Woodley added seven receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown, while Yobo finished with one reception for six yards and a score.
Defensively,
Jackson Kink led the Lights with 14 total tackles, including seven solo stops.
Braydon Cline added 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and an interception.
De'Amoni Wright recorded five tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack.
Northern finished the afternoon with 248 yards of total offense, including 230 passing yards. Dickinson State totaled 457 yards, including 177 on the ground and 280 through the air.
With the loss, Northern moves to 0-2 on the season and will look to bounce back next week at home against The College of Idaho at 12pm.
