Owen Smith
Student Assistant Coach – MSU-Northern Men's Basketball

Owen Smith enters his first season as a student assistant coach with the MSU-Northern Lights basketball program, bringing a strong foundation of leadership, academic excellence, and on-court experience to the coaching staff. Smith spent the past two seasons as a member of the Lights, where he served as a team captain during his final year.

A dedicated student-athlete, Smith was recognized as a two-time Academic All-Conference honoree and earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2025. A Frontier Conference 2024 Champion of Character winner, his transition from player to coach reflects his deep understanding of the program’s culture, expectations, and competitive standards.

In his role as a student assistant, Smith is involved in several key areas, including scouting, recruiting, practice and workout planning, player skill development, and strength training. His firsthand experience as a player for the Lights provides valuable insight and relatability as he supports the current roster.

Originally from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Smith is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education at MSU-Northern and is on track to graduate in May 2026. He is excited to continue serving the Lights program and to remain an active part of the Havre community.
