Havre, Mont.- In their season opener, the No. 4 MSU-Northern Lights took down North Idaho College 25-10. Of the 10 matches, the Lights won six. It was a close battle throughout, but Northern pulled away with their last two matches for the win.
The Cardinals won the first two matches by decision to go up 6-0, but a pin by
Dylan Veis (141) over Carlos Quinones at 4:01 would tie the score.
Northern won the next two matches at 149 and 157 as
Drake Randall won a 13-4 major decision and
Tommy Cooper won by a decision of 9-7.
Andrew Bartel picked up a win for the Lights with a 6-4 sudden victory over Alex Aguilar.
The Lights saw big performances from seniors
Ben Stroh (197-pound transfer from University of Wyoming) and
Taylor Kornoely (285).
Stroh won a 12-4 major decision over Jeremy Merryweather and
Kornoely beat Cooper Thomas with a technical fall of 23-3.
Northern moves to 1-0 on the season and will travel to Laramie, Wyo. on Nov. 5 to participate in the 38
th annual Cowboy Open hosted by the University of Wyoming.
