Story of the Game
For the second time in the 2017-2018 preseason, the MSU-Northern Skylights defeated the Dickinson State University Blue Hawks. This time however; the Skylights won by single digits 66-61. Â
Stat of the Game
The Skylights outrebounded the Blue Hawks 42-28 with 12 of those being offensive rebounds. Sophomore guard
Shiloh McCormick led the team with 10 total (five offensive and five defensive).
Turning Point
DSU took the early lead at the start of the game with a three-point basket, but junior guard
Peyton Filius quickly tied the game on the next play as she hit her own shot from behind the arc. She went on the hit two more shots from deep and helped extend the Northern lead to 11 points at the end of the first quarter (23-12). In the second quarter, the Skylights built a 15-point lead at the 8:15 mark, but scrappy defense by the Blue Hawks cut the lead to just seven points (35-28) going into halftime. Northern held DSU to just eight third quarter points, but a 25-point fourth quarter by the Blue Hawks helped to stage a comeback. The Skylight's offense went cold as they didn't score for well over three minutes towards the end of the quarter, but senior guard
Brandy Lambourne was able to get into the lane and create contact to get to the foul line down the stretch. She went 3-4 from the charity strip in the closing seconds to help Northern secure the lead.
The Skylights So Far
Northern is now 3-1 on the season.
