No. 5 Dakota State Pulls Away Late to Beat MSU-Northern 79–61

Montana State University-Northern hung tough for three quarters, but a dominant fourth-period surge lifted Dakota State to a 79–61 win on Saturday in Frontier Conference play.

Northern opened with good energy, keeping the game within reach at 20–16 after the first quarter. The Skylights continued to battle behind the scoring of Canzas HisBadHorse and Becky Melcher, but Dakota State's steady execution allowed the Trojans to hold a 38–33 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw both teams trade baskets, with Northern staying within striking distance at 54–49 heading into the final period. But that's when the Trojans slammed the door. Dakota State erupted for 25 fourth-quarter points while holding Northern to just 12, turning a close contest into a comfortable win.

HisBadHorse led the Skylights with 19 points, and 8 rebounds, providing a strong interior presence. Melcher added 16 points and 7 boards, knocking down four three-pointers to keep Northern's offense afloat. Ciera Agasiva contributed 13 points and 5 rebounds in another solid outing.

Dakota State's balance proved to be the difference. Cierra Watkins put together a standout performance with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists, controlling the game on both ends. Mackenzi Simmons hit four threes on her way to 12 points, while Tabor Teel nearly posted a double-double with 9 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Northern shot just 34.3 percent from the field and 25 percent from three, making it difficult to keep pace late. Dakota State countered with 40 percent shooting and a much stronger finish to secure the victory.

The Skylights drop to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in Conference. The Skylights will head home on Saturday Nov. 29 against Stephens College at 5pm.
