The Montana State University-Northern Skylights impressive four-set victory over the University of Montana Western Bulldogs on Thursday night. After dropping the opening frame, Northern stormed back to win the next three sets and claim the match 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-17).
The Bulldogs came out strong in the first set, capitalizing on Northern's early miscues to take control. Western's attack, led by Averi Look and Kennedy Lingenfelter, pushed the Bulldogs to a 25-22 first-set win. But from that point forward, the momentum swung firmly in Northern's favor.
The Skylights settled in during the second set, tightening up defensively and finding rhythm at the net.
Macee Selman and
Lexa Stock led a balanced offensive surge that helped Northern even the match with a 25-19 win. Northern carried that confidence into the third, where consistent serving and cleaner transitions kept Western on its heels. A late run sealed the 25-20 third-set win before the Skylights closed out the match convincingly with a 25-17 fourth set.
Selman paced the Skylights with 13 kills on just one error, hitting an impressive .316 while also contributing 21 digs. Stock added nine kills and seven digs, while the team as a whole posted 48 kills and a .169 hitting percentage. Defensively, Northern was outstanding — recording 95 digs compared to Western's 91 — and held the Bulldogs to just a .053 team efficiency.
For Montana Western, Look led the way with 12 kills, and Lingenfelter followed closely with 11. Despite 50 total kills, the Bulldogs struggled with consistency, committing 40 attacking errors over four sets.
The win moves MSU-Northern to 16-11 overall and 14-7 in Conference Play.
The Skylights will look to carry this momentum into tomorrow's game against (RV) Montana Tech at 7pm.
