The MSU-Northern Skylights bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat (RV) Valley City 3-1 (27-29, 25-22, 25-14, 25-20) on Friday evening.
The Vikings controlled the opening set, building a 17-11 lead. The Skylights clawed back with a 6-1 run and later tied the score at 23, but Valley City edged out the set, 29-27.
Northern responded in the second, trading points with the Vikings until a late 5-0 run pushed them ahead 24-20. The Skylights closed it out 25-22 to even the match.
Carrying that momentum, MSU-Northern stormed out to a 9-2 lead in the third. The Skylights kept Valley City off balance with strong serving and steady runs, cruising to a 25-14 win.
The fourth set was a battle early, but Northern pulled away with a 6-1 run to take a 16-11 advantage. From there, the Skylights held their composure to secure the match 25-20.
Northern finished with a .197 hitting percentage, 58 kills, 11 aces, 58 assists, and 82 digs. Macee Selman posted a standout performance with 13 kills (.444), 23 assists, and 14 digs. Kadence Wiggins also tallied 13 kills, while Baily Egan anchored the defense with 21 digs. Emily Bird dished out 28 assists.
Valley City hit .104 with 48 kills, seven blocks, and 81 digs. Danielle Hagler paced the Vikings with 19 kills (.357) and three blocks. Gracie Schumacher contributed 20 assists and 10 digs, while JayCee Richter led all players with 25 digs.
The Skylights (4-6 overall and 2-2 in Conference) return to action tomorrow at 5 p.m. against Mayville State following the Northern football game.
