The Montana State University-Northern Skylights saw their four-match winning streak come to an end Friday evening, falling to No. 23 Lewis-Clark State College 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-16) at the P1FCU Activity Center.
Northern, which entered the match unbeaten at 4-0, battled throughout the contest but couldn't overcome a strong Lewis-Clark State attack. The Warriors improved to 5-0 on the season with the victory.
The Warriors controlled the opening set, hitting .378 with 18 kills while Northern recorded eight kills and hit .167. Lewis-Clark State built an early lead and maintained the advantage throughout the set, taking the opener 25-18.
Northern responded in the second set, keeping the Warriors within reach throughout the frame. The Skylights hit .118 and Lewis-Clark State struggled offensively, hitting -.023 with 13 attack errors. Despite the opportunity, the Warriors closed out the set 25-23 to take a 2-0 advantage.
The third set saw Lewis-Clark State regain its offensive rhythm. The Warriors recorded 20 kills while hitting an impressive .447, pulling away for a 25-16 victory to complete the sweep.
Macy Uffelman led Northern with eight kills, while
Caleigh Case and
Holly Newman each added six kills. Case was particularly efficient offensively, hitting .545 with six kills on 11 attacks.
Newman provided a strong all-around performance, finishing with
15 digs, eight assists, six kills and three blocks.
Emily Bird recorded 15 assists, while
Kambria Maloy contributed three service aces and eight digs.
Northern also found success at the net, finishing with
eight blocks compared to just two for Lewis-Clark State. Case led the way with five blocks, while Newman and
Kendall Scheffelmear each recorded three.
The Skylights finished the match with 25 kills, six aces, eight blocks, 25 assists and 39 digs. Lewis-Clark State countered with 50 kills, 10 aces, two blocks, 47 assists and 46 digs.
Hadyn Smith led the Warriors with 10 kills, while Taylor Boyce and Mikale Roy each added eight. Teagan Scott recorded 23 assists and Ella Stosich led Lewis-Clark State with 15 digs.
The Skylights will look to bounce back in their next match as they continue play in Lewiston.
