Montana State University-Northern Head Cross Country Coach Deborah Callahan announced the signing of Jacob Burns to join the Cross Country and Distance Track program in the fall. Burns is from Browning High School.

"I'm very excited that Jacob will be coming to MSU-Northern and joining our Cross Country and Track team" said Coach Callahan. "His focused attitude, hard work, integrity and pride of teamwork will strengthen the team" "We are excited be part of his advancing to the next level of his academic and athletic career."

As a runner in cross country, Jacob achieved a personal best time of 18.47 in the 5000-meter event. On the track, his times continued to improve across multiple distances, including 1.04 s in the 400 meters, 2:23 in the 800 meters, and 5.54 in the 1600 meters. His athletic performance was key to Browning's achievements: 2nd place finish at the Western A Fall Classic for both 2025 and 2024, 3rd Place finish at the 2024 and a 1st Place finish in 2023 at the Class A State Cross Country Championship.

Jacob's commitment and adaptability were evident throughout high school, where he earned letters and received Academic All-State honors in every sport he participated in. Additionally, he was awarded Most Improved for his achievements in running. In addition to running, he excelled in wrestling. Jacob maintained a 3.69 GPA through consistent effort.

"Jacob always trusted the process, bought into the grind and never looked for shortcuts" states Roy McNabb, Browning High School Cross Country Coach. "Over these past few years, the miles added up, the confidence grew and the results followed. His achievements are a product of discipline, consistency and doing the little things right every single day. Proud does not even begin to cover it."

"Jacob never allows setbacks to define him and consistently seek growth and purpose through adversity" states Kellen Hall, AD for the Browning High School. "This resilience speaks volumes about who he is, both as a student and as an athlete, as he continues to develop and move forward in life.

Jacob is the son of Samantha Grant. "Jacob grew up with a strong work ethic in school, sports, and life. He only wants what is best for himself, but he wants the same for peers" states Samantha. "I know he will go far in life!"

Jacob plans to major in Civil Engineering. When asked why he chose Northern, he replied, "I want to continue my athletic and educational journey at the next level."  Coach Callahan states "We look forward to his contribution to the team and watching him grow here at Northern'"!
