Montana State University-Northern Head Cross Country Coach
Deborah Callahan announced the signing of Kayden Rutherford to join the Cross Country and Distance Track program this fall.
"I am excited that Kayden is bringing his talent and leadership to MSU-Northern and joining our running program." said Coach Callahan. "Though reserved, his determination and discipline show a strong work ethic. He carefully assesses situations before making plans." "We are excited to be part of his academic and athletic career."Â
Kayden from Browning, Montana, excels in both Cross Country and Track. His personal best for the 5000 meters is 17.33. On the track, his times continued to improve across multiple distances, including 53.79 in the 400 meters, 2.08 in the 800 meters, and 5.17 in the 1600 meters. His athletic performance was key to Browning's achievements: 2
nd place finish at the Western a Fall Classic for both 2025 and 2024. 3
rd place finish at the 2024 and a 1
st place finish in 2023 at the Class A Cross Country. When he was not running, he wrestled and played golf.
Kayden received All-Conference and Academic All-State Honors while he attended Browning High School. At Browning High School's signing, Kayden's coach Roy McNabb praised his quiet focus and determination. Kayden takes responsibility, avoids shortcuts, and always finishes what he starts.
"Kayden, the silent leader of the group, runs strong, has a great stride and makes running look graceful and powerful at the same time." state Kellen Hall, AD for Browning High School. "He leads by example, letting his results speak for themselves by becoming an All-Conference Runner multiple times. No matter the conditions, wind, rain or snow, Kayden remains committed to sharpening his craft."
Kayden is the son of Lyle Rutherford and Jessica Burke. "Every mile I run now is a step toward who I want to become—stronger, faster, and unwilling to quit when it matters most" is a quote that was shared by his father, Lyle.
Kayden plans to major in Electrical Engineering. When asked about why he chose Northern, he replied "I chose MSUN for the XC and track team." Â Coach Callahan states "We look forward to his contribution to the team and watching him grow here at Northern"!
