Butch Marshall attended NMC on an athletic scholarship and played basketball for the Lights from 1974 to 1978. He also participated in track during that time and is the only male NMC athlete to compete at the NAIA track and field championships his sophomore and junior years.

He graduated from NMC in 1979 with an elementary education degree and later earned his master's degree from NMC in 1989. During his first teaching position at White Sulphur Springs he coached junior high boys basketball, "C" squad, and track and was assistant coach for girls varsity basketball. He has served as sixth grade teacher and administrative assistant at KG Elementary School since 1981 and has coached and assisted with varsity girls and boys basketball, junior high boys and girls basketball, and track. He was a member of the Montana Officials Association from 1987 to 1993, officiating several district and divisional tournaments for class A and C schools. Marshall is active in the Kremlin and Gildford communities as a member of the KG Booster Club and coach and umpire for youth baseball teams. He and wife, Cindy, have been married for 20 years and they have two sons, Adam and Eric.
